Crys Melton

Childbirth Educator, Birth Assistant, Doula

Crys graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Originally drawn to zoology with a particular interest in big cats, she eventually found herself immersed in the Biology and Society program. During her studies, attending a lecture by an Obstetrician alongside a Certified Nurse Midwife, followed by their joint Q&A session, opened her eyes to the diverse perspectives and approaches surrounding childbirth.

After graduation, her first pregnancy ignited a desire for a natural birth experience with the support of a midwife. While these aspirations didn't materialize, she found immense support from a dedicated doctor and had diligently researched the birthing process. Unfortunately, a series of unforeseen events led to a highly medicalized birth involving numerous interventions and medications. Thankfully, she delivered her son vaginally, though the experience proved long and emotionally challenging for both her and her husband, Levi. The significant lack of consistent care left them wishing for a constant source of support throughout the process. This led them to discover the invaluable role of doulas.

Fueled by passion and unwavering encouragement from her husband and her close friends, she embarked on her journey to become a doula. She completed her initial training and certification with DONA, a prominent organization dedicated to doula training and providing resources for families. Immersing herself in the world of birth attendance, she found immense fulfillment in supporting others.

During her second pregnancy, she hired a doula and experienced a beautiful, natural hospital birth with her daughter. Soon after her daughter's arrival, she resumed doula work. Recognizing the information gap hindering informed decision-making and causing anxiety among her clients, she pursued further training to become a certified childbirth educator, offering both group and private classes.

Adding another chapter to her birth work journey, she unexpectedly found herself drawn to placenta processing. Initially hesitant, she eventually embraced this service, now processing placentas for both her doula clients and mothers seeking this service independently. Unexpectedly, she discovered a passion for this unique aspect of her work.

Beyond her dedication to birth-related services, she is actively involved in connecting mothers with donor breast milk and families in need. Her family has become accustomed to welcoming families at their doorstep for milk exchanges, further solidifying her commitment to supporting mothers in various ways.

When not immersed in the world of birth, she prioritizes time with her family. A dedicated baseball fan, she carries on the tradition established by her mother, holding season tickets for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Her son, now an Arizona State University student, keeps her company at various sporting events, including Suns, Mercury, Cardinals, Rising, Coyotes, and ASU games. Their family also enjoys playing games, watching movies together, and taking walks. She is an animal lover, having groomed dogs and cats for over 25 years. Previously, she also taught Kung Fu until her doula work commitments necessitated a shift in her schedule. Completing their family picture are their two feline companions, Coraline and Dzur, who reign supreme in their household.
